Imam Jamal Rahman

Tacheria recently had the joy of welcoming Imam Jamal Rahman for a day filled with wisdom, humor, tenderness, and deep spiritual insight. It was one of those rare gatherings where learning felt like remembering — where teachings from ancient mystics met the lived experience of our own hearts.

Throughout the day, Jamal invited us into the rich world of Islamic mysticism, drawing from the luminous voices of Rumi, Rabia, and Hafez. Their poetry, he reminded us, is not meant to be studied from a distance but entered — breathed in, carried, and allowed to soften us from the inside out.

The Whirling Dervishes: A Dance of the Heart

One of the most moving teachings of the day was Jamal’s reflection on the whirling dervishes, whose sacred spinning is a prayer in motion.

He shared that dervishes spin from right to left around the heart, mirroring the planets orbiting the sun and the soul’s orbit around the Divine.

During the spin:

  • The right hand lifts upward, open to receive divine grace.

  • The left hand extends downward, offering that grace back to humanity.

It is a living reminder that spiritual awakening is never for ourselves alone — it is always meant to flow outward in compassion.

Sacred Naming and the Power of Silence

Jamal also guided us into the practice of Sacred Naming, exploring how the names we use for God — Allah, Beloved, Mystery, Compassion, Friend — shape the way we relate to the Holy.

He spoke of the profound invitation to meet God in silence, where no name is needed and no words can contain the Presence that meets us there. In that quiet, we are reminded that the Divine is not far away but intimately woven into our breath, our longing, our awareness.

Returning to Nature as Teacher

Throughout the day, Jamal returned again and again to the wisdom of the natural world.

He encouraged us to step outside, to listen, to notice — because nature is always offering guidance:

  • The patience of trees

  • The generosity of sunlight

  • The humility of soil

  • The resilience of desert life

In nature, he said, we encounter a God who is spacious, playful, and endlessly creative.

A Day That Will Continue to Echo

Our time with Imam Jamal Rahman was more than a workshop — it was a gentle opening of the heart. We laughed, we reflected, we learned, and we sat in silence together.

We left with a deeper sense of connection: to one another, to the mystics who came before us, and to the Sacred that moves through all things.

May the teachings of Rumi, Rabia, Hafez, and the whirling dervishes continue to guide us.

May silence become a doorway.

May nature remain our teacher.

And may the grace we receive always flow outward in love.
